The health benefits:

Increased flexibility, muscle strength, fitness, decreased stress and improved relaxation, improved posture, improved immune function, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, integration of mind, body and spirit, improved energy flow (qi or pronounced chi), and improvement in all aspects of health.

What is Qi?

In ancient China, Qi is the life force or life energy flowing within you and through channels in the body called meridians. It includes what you are born with and what you absorb from your physical environment by way of eating, drinking, breathing, etc. The qi circulates through the body performing many functions to maintain good health. Qi is stored in the dan tian, a small area situated three finger breadths below your belly button.

The concept of qi is fundamental to ancient Chinese medicine, if your qi is strong and harmonious you will enjoy good health. Therefore qi must be cultivated and regular practice consists of breathing exercises integrated with movement and meditation which is qigong. Tai Chi has incorporated qi gong into its practice.e

Why Tai Chi for arthritis and fall prevention?

There are many styles and forms of Tai Chi. Some are more complex and can cause injury, others are more simple and slow and don’t strain the joints. Dr. Paul Lam from Australia is both a medical doctor educated and practicing in Australia as well as a Chinese medicine doctor and master in Tai Chi. With his knowledge he has participated in more than 20 medical studies and collaborated with the National Institute of Health (NIH) and together have demonstrated proven health benefits from the specific series he has developed for specific medical conditions including arthritis and fall prevention, diabetes, and more.

He created the Tai Chi Institute for Health as well to share this knowledge and practice with health care practitioners around the world. Those certified in his programs must have degrees and be licenced for their profession including medical doctors, nurses and physical and occupational therapists. His programs have improved the quality of life for individuals all over the world and are recommended by the NIH, the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), National Council on Aging, and Arthritis Foundation.

The program of Tai Chi for arthritis has had all the high risk movements removed and uses Sun style Tai Chi which requires less bending in the knee, a wider stance (more stable base of support) and slow movements. It is easy to learn and can be learned within days or months depending on the learner and is safe for all ages from children to very elderly. It CAN BE DONE SEATED, as well as standing depending on the need/limitations of the individual.

Instructors certified in Dr. Lams Tai Chi programs must not only be licensed in their professional field but then must pass certification and then maintain certification with continuing education. I have been certified in Dr. Lam’s program for Arthritis and Fall prevention and have maintained it since June 2018.
